Do you have a lawn in your garden or on your property and need to be able to drive a car or trailer over it regularly? Then you are like our customer who solved this problem as follows. The existing lawn was originally intended as a garden area, then at some point a shelter was added for dry storage of firewood and the trailer, among other things. Time and again, the unpaved lawn had to be driven on to store new firewood or to retrieve the trailer. By driving on the lawn on the always same paths, furrows, or ruts, ruts are created. Not only does it look unsightly, but each time you drive on the path, you sink deeper. To solve this problem, there are two approaches, either you decide to make a paved lawn or a stabilized gravel or crushed stone surface. In both cases it is recommended to improve the bearing capacity of the subsoil by soil replacement.
This is exactly what our customer did. The existing soil / topsoil was excavated and replaced by a compacted gravel base layer as a substructure. The weed fabric UG100 was then laid on top of the subgrade to inhibit or suppress later weed growth. The geotextile fabric also performs another important function. It separates the levelling layer / laying bed of fine chippings applied to the weed fabric from the subgrade. The fabric prevents fine chippings from migrating into the subgrade. This layer of fine chippings is then spread over the entire surface and smoothed and levelled with a screed / batten.
Now the laying of the gravel mats KM30 could also be started. To do this, simply place the gravel mats on the fine chippings and connect or couple them together. Especially useful and helpful is that the gravel mats can be walked on and loaded even in the unfilled state. Now you only have to check whether the gravel mats have to be adapted to the existing surface or fitted . If so, then the gravel mat can be easily processed by sawing, cutting or separating.
Finally, the laid gravel mats were backfilled with crushed stone or . We recommend that you overfill the gravel mats or also Gravel Grid at least 1-2 cm above the top edge. This will protect the gravel mat from gravitational forces, damage and increased wear, while still maintaining its stabilizing effect. Any bulk material such as crushed stone, chippings, decorative gravel, fine chippings and of course gravel are suitable for filling. As far as the grain size of the gravel or crushed stone is concerned, we recommend not going below 6 mm for the smallest grain and not above 22 mm for the largest. For visually beautiful garden paths is recommended e.g. The grain size 6/8 and for parking lots, driveways, driveways 8/12 and for intensively used, heavily trafficked areas 12/16. Keep in mind for areas that are to be driven on that gravel and crushed stone can settle in the tire tread and you can thereby gravel "drive out" , therefore applies to gravel areas at least 8/12 or 12/16 to choose as grain size. The KM30 have the advantage of being water permeable thanks to the microperforated base plate and support the natural drainage of gravel.
