Description

The problem of dents in the asphalt caused by swap bodies or swap bodies in front of the truck loading ramps is familiar to every logistics company, freight forwarder, and all operators of a shipping center, logistics center, distribution center, transshipment center or shipping warehouse, distribution warehouse, central warehouse, transshipment warehouse, etc.

How to prevent dents in asphalt in front of loading docks?

With exactly this question the responsible operating technician of a large international logistics company contacted us, when the renovation of the depot in the area in front of the loading ramps was planned.  It was clear that new asphalt had to be laid, in order to prevent the formation of new dents, the idea came up to install massive, pressure-stable  plastic plates in the floor.

Are plastic panels strong enough to permanently support the point load of the supports of swap bodies?

Yes, if the size is right. Since this was a pilot project at the time of the inquiry, the decision was made to use load distribution panels with edge dimensions of 800x800 mm and a thickness of 60 mm and a max.  load capacity of 30t. Since there were no empirical values available at that time, the company played it safe for the time being. Today we could say that  even smaller dimensioned load distribution plates fulfill the desired purpose.

What advantages does plastic have compared to asphalt?

  • Better pressure stability against dents
  • Better temperature stability against softening
  • Better sliding properties against shear forces
  • Low moisture absorption against frost damage
  • Less wear of the surface against damage
  • Free choice of color as non-removable marking
  • Free choice of color for improved visibility & safety

Is it possible to install colored load distribution plates in the asphalt for better visibility?

Yes sure, we even recommend it! Imagine a bright yellow plastic plate incorporated in the black or dark in the asphalt. You will immediately know where to place the swap body or the supports of the swap body, even in bad weather and light conditions.
