Properly connecting plastic panels for construction areas and roads

Published on November 30, 2020 by Kim Schäfer

Construction sites create various functional areas. These include access roads for materials and loading areas where materials are stored, handled, and processed. Especially in the area Ground protection This demonstrates how crucial the correct connection of plastic panels is for stability, safety and a smooth process.

Plastic Shim Plates work only as a stable surface if they systematically interconnected will be. Crucially, all connection points must be fully utilized to accommodate movement, shear forces, and absorbing stress.

Why connections on BE surfaces count

Construction site areas are among the most heavily used areas on construction sites. Delivery, handling, storage, order picking, and assembly all take place here. Simultaneously vehicles are moving with varying axle loads, such as trucks, wheel loaders or excavators, and tight driving maneuvers across the area, resulting primarily in horizontal Shear forces arise.

Additionally, typical effects such as Walking movements within the area, as well as thermal expansion when heated and contraction when cooled. The area is therefore no rigid system, but fundamentally in motion.

What is crucial for stable BE surfaces?

A complete system connection of the plastic panels, which Forces are distributed evenly and prevents uncontrolled movements. The crucial point is therefore not to completely prevent movement, but to control it within a certain range. stable bond respectively.

If plastic panels are not connected to each other, they move freely and uncontrollably. The surface loses its structure and has to be realigned repeatedly.

Only through this connection does a System network, in which the plates can continue to move, but only within defined limits.

Tool-free connection using system principle

The connection system works with Round steel connectors for plastic sheets and comes fully without srewing or additional aids. The connection is thus made. tools and can be quickly implemented in everyday construction site life.

The connectors are inserted through the pre-drilled holes and act like a clamp. First, the connector is threaded through the horizontal plate. Then, the second plate is positioned at a 90-degree angle, the connector is inserted through the opposite hole, and the plate is then lowered again.

How are plastic sheets joined together?

Through tool-free round steel connectors that mechanically couple the plates and enable a stable connection without screws.

This creates a mechanically stable connection, which can withstand both tension and compression. Crucially, the plates must not be able to decouple.

At the same time, the connection ensures that the plates flush with the floor They should remain aligned with each other. This reduces wear and tear and minimizes the risk of tripping hazards.

This is how stable surfaces are created on construction sites.

In the context of construction site setup, plastic panels are used for construction site areas as well as for construction roads and temporary access routes.

First, individual panels are coupled together to form smaller units. These units are then connected along the connecting axes and gradually extended. This creates a continuous and load-bearing surface.

  • Use connection points strategically across the entire area
  • Coupling units step by step
  • Build the area as a coherent system

Efficient installation and typical errors

In practice, attempts are often made to minimize the installation effort. Connection points are deliberately omitted, or the tiles are only coupled at the corners. In some cases, they are even laid without any overlap.

What happens if plastic sheets are not joined together?

The surface loses its structure, slabs shift uncontrollably, and the protective function is not permanently guaranteed.

This limits the system's functionality from the outset. These effects are exacerbated under load. In many cases, the surface must be realigned or relaid subsequently.

An efficient approach is structured installation by a team of three. Two people position and hold the panels, while a third person prepares and inserts the connectors. This creates a smooth and efficient workflow.

What complete connections achieve

Anyone who uses all available connection options will reach the best possible stability and load distributionForces are absorbed evenly, transitions remain smooth and stable.

At the same time, uneven surfaces and tripping hazards are avoided. This reduces wear on the slabs and lowers the risk of damage – both to the slabs and to vehicles.

Especially in areas with pedestrian, delivery and heavy construction traffic, a continuously connected surface is the basis for safe procedures and stable processes.

Plastic Shim Plates as an alternative

Many construction sites still use Steel road plates or wooden systems. Plastic panels are often underestimated, even though they offer clear advantages in many applications.

For over 20 years we have been working with construction roads and construction surfaces made of plastic and know the requirements from practical experience.

If you would like to determine which solution is suitable for your construction site or how existing surfaces can be made more stable and economical, we would be happy to support you with our Advisory from practice.
