Description

The Zeil in Frankfurt is the busiest shopping street in Germany. It can attract up to 10,000 passers-by per hour. In 2016, the shopping tower with roof terrace that characterized Frankfurt's shopping mile for years became history. A new building was to take the place of the Zeilgalerie. In the course of this, the Zeilgalerie was demolished, gutted and completely rebuilt. The Zeilgalerie was replaced by a glass complex with an area of 14,800 square meters. The "Upper Zeil" is now a household name. With seven floors and a width of 45 meters, it is the new crowd puller on the Zeil. In the course of this "mammoth project", a call for tenders was issued by the public order department, business owners and project managers with the aim of protecting the floor and providing barrier-free access to the stores, as well as the business owners, who are particularly concerned that customers do not miss out due to urban obstacles.

Thus, two essential criteria were an essential part of this tender. On the one hand, the high-quality floor or pavement on the Zeil had to be protected from heavy construction traffic, and on the other hand, accessibility for passers-by had to be guaranteed. This naturally presented potential manufacturers and suppliers with a challenge that should not be underestimated. In principle, these two criteria are based on fundamentally contradictory requirements. As a rule, effective protection against heavy construction traffic is not really barrier-free for pedestrian traffic. Whereas barrier-free ground protection is usually not suitable for heavy construction site equipment to drive over.

Added to these inherently difficult requirements were additional complications. For one thing, the entire system is laid floating, so it is not fixed or anchored at any point. Secondly, there are flexing movements due to traffic or foot traffic. So there is always movement in the system. When it is warm, the mats expand; when it is cold, the floor mats shrink. The whole thing is also influenced by any gradients that may be present. The resolution of these conflicting objectives could be achieved by regular maintenance and upgrading of the installed floor mats. This 22 mm thick floor mat has a 4-sided circumferential rebate groove for seamless connection or for the attachment of ramps.

The light cushioning effect of the soft PVC used is optimal for occasional or permanent standing and walking. So perfect for the passers-by of the busy Zeil. The possibility to attach ramps to the BM22 floor mat also provides an optimal answer to the question of accessibility. The ramp enables level compensation to the existing floor with a maximum construction height of 20 mm.

So far so good! If there were only one more question! How is it now with the passability by heavy building site vehicles. Well, the floor mat BM22 is specified with a load capacity of 20.00 tons. The permissible axle loads for vehicles that are usually used in construction site traffic are between 11.5 and 18.00 tons, depending on the number of axles and the respective axle spacing. This means that the floor mats can be driven on without hesitation.
